I was only diagnosed two years ago and am still struggling to find my triggers, but just wondered how on earth you cope when travelling/out and about?? We went away last weekend and whilst packing I could feel myself cramping up and in a lot of pain. Took my medication but made no difference. Was in and out of bathroom all morning. Just about coped with the train journey but even though there was only a 7 or 8 minute walk the other end I didn't even make that - I had to run into a restaurant , not making eye contact with any staff and just bomb it to the toilet. I was like that all of Saturday and most of Sunday, and even though Mr Smow says I didn't spoil the weekend I know I did. In fact it was so bad that he booked a cab all the way home as he knew I was panicking about the train. How do you manage??

I had IBS quite badly when I was working but my symptoms were totally different, I used to get terrible stomach cramps, back pain and sweats which could only be relieved by lying down until the wind blew it away so to speak. Once I stopped teaching it almost stopped, I may have it once a year but memories of those lunchtimes lying on a couple of desks pushed together are still vivid. as under the impression that my trigger was stress related.
Missing the 'I was' at the start of the last sentence, see previous post about skipping parts of words!

Bus open doesn't seem to work either : (

As for the nausea it's a vicious circle with eating - I don't want to eat because I feel sick and so on..... Don't remember when I last ate a full meal.....
Ditto Smow.
See my latest post on the Buscopan thread to see how it actually works.
It's no great surprise that I have gone from a comfortable size 14 to a negligible size 8/10.

I frequently go 5 days without eating. Not proud nor boasting, I just can't eat to my annoyance.
In that case you need food replacement supplements. Ensure are good, they are available on prescription (quite expensive to buy OTC).
smow, its not prescribed for it but a small dose of migralieve might help. I find it more blocking than loperamide and its got an anti nausea element in the pink version....I speak as a sufferer and not a medic.

I find hald of one tablet helps me smow...the adult dose for migraine is one to two tablets. It has paracetamol in it so be careful about dosage.
Ecclescake - could you have Crohns disease?
I remember reading somewhere that there is a printed card, explaining that you have a condition which means you need immediate access to a toilet, that might help you when you are out and about.

Well I never knew that James. I've actually just got back from my doctors and she said that Nortriptyline(amitryptiline) although used normally for depression, it's been found in small doses to help IBS. She said for me to look into it online and if I feel I want to try it then she'll prescribe it. Have never heard of it being used for IBS.
Strange how drugs prescribed for one condition are effective in treating another unrelated condition. The classic example is, of course, Viagra.

Viagra?
I was diagnosed with IBS many years ago,I laboriously kept a note of what I had eaten in a day and after about 6 months I had worked out what foods to avoid.Touch wood I have been more or less free of it ever since.Whilst I was working out my diet my doctor prescribed Colpermin which I found very effective in keeping the cramps away.
Viagra was originally supplied to patients with angina. It was only when a large number of male patients showed a great reluctance to come off it after their symptoms improved that the side effects were discovered.

Lol Jackdaw - how funny!
Yes think I should keep a diary tbh.
Doctor prescribed me Mebeverine hydrochloride- she said it would take a couple of weeks to see any difference but is hopeful.
