Security Checks At Airport

when I had my accident last year I had a screw put in my shoulder, will this set the airport alarms off ,my new hips don't .

To be on the safe side it might be worth getting a letter from your GP confirming this - my GP provided me with such a letter free of charge (though there may be a small fee depending on your practice). I haven't had to use it yet but imagine that it will help to reassure security staff.

My wife has this problem sets the alarm off every time, she just tells them it is a screw they are quite happy with it.

Yes it will set off the alarm but as Eddie says, they will accept that.
Your hips are almost certainly not metal and will not set off the alarm.

OH has lots of screws and plate in her leg. Sometimes she is stopped, others not. To be on the safe side, she carries an x-ray of the metalwork.

My wife has a replacement hip which always sets off the machines. She explains and the staff are always familiar with this and understanding - sometimes they (immediately) ask before she has explained. Most of the time she is scanned with a hand held device, sometimes not. In the UK she is usually (but rarely elsewhere) religiously frisked with her shoes off in addition to the handheld scanning and I think once or twice she has been swabbed for chemical traces as well. She has no letter or X-ray and I very much doubt if the staff would be interested in one (except out of politeness), these people are trained to be (a bit variously from country to country) pedantic and independent of persuasion.

We never avail ourselves of the opportunity presented at every single airport in the UK and abroad (and infuriatingly unavoidable) of taking aboard aircraft a potentially very offensive weapon, namely a "duty free" glass bottle purchased in the post-inspection shopping areas.

My husband has got 3 titanium screws in his shoulder following a very nasty accident and two operations to re-locate and pin his dislocated and fractured Right shoulder . He has flown abroad on many occasions since that time, and has never "beeped" when going through security. He doesn't have a letter from his consultant or GP, either - he has never been asked for one ....
