Not necessarily a massive deal. Did they quote your LVEF?
Best ask the doctor dealing with the patient.
No big deal.

My guess is that the patient has had a "heart murmur" probably a mitral valve problem and that she has been supervised re. mitral valve surgery. On of the indications for this operation is that her/his left ventricle is beginning to "struggle" and one sign of that is an abnormal transthoracic echocardiogram.
They will almost certainly offer your friend mitral valve surgery......even though she feels fine. The modern feeling is that the sooner it is done the better....others including myself would not agree;-)

The patient is a family member

On a visit to GP, the patient's heart was listened to and was told that , something sounded a bit unusual. So an echocardiogram was arranged

I have seen a copy of the report .

Given that sqad has mentioned Mitral valve – the report amongst other things states –

---------

Mitral Valve
Peak E-Wave : 0.53m/s Peak A-Wave : 0.6 m/s
E/A Ratio : 0.88
Deceleration time : 373 msec

Mitral valve Summary:
Leaflets thin and mobile , valve opens well. Minimal regurgitation demonstrated

Summary
Patient in Sinus Rhythm, 73 bpm
Non Dilated left heart with normal LV systolic function
Features of grade 1 diastolic dysfunction
No significant valvular abnormalities demonstrated
Non dilated right heart with normal RV systolic function

-------------

Patient saw GP today
No mitral surgery was mentioned

What's your further opinion sqad ?
Bazile....my opinion remains exactly the same following your further details.....in that it is the report of a fairly healthy but ageing heart.....the heart that will do the person adequately for the next 15 years.
I think that my wording of "struggle" was perhaps a bit OTT and a better word would have been.."complaining"..........altogether, no big deal.
On further thoughts and reading your expanded report, mitral valve surgery is not an option, not needed, the valve is working adequately.
I would suggest that all that is needed would be six monthly checks.
Sounds normal

can I have her heart please ? ( AF and LVEF 35% )

You havent given us her ejection fraction
but with what you have said it will be around 50%

normal within the terms of this conversation
// I would suggest that all that is needed would be six monthly checks.//

what ? even I dont get 6 mo echoes and my heart function is totally crap!

grade 1 dysfunction is so near to normal as to be... normal

Thanks for your information / advice
Crikey - only 15 Years ?

Question Author
PP
There is a lot of measurements in the report
I can't see a reference to AF
What is that ?

Under the heading-

Left Vertricle
Ejection fraction - simpson method

it states - EF ( Singlepl simpson ): 59.9 %

Is that what you are referring to for LVEF ?

LVEF is in the normal range.
Great info from Sqad and Peter. I have just been for a scan or echocardiogram if you like. The appointment came out of the blue, but I was assured that it was just routine prompted by the top honcho from when I suffered an aortic dissection and aortic arch aneurism. The young fellow today(after a bit of prompting from Me) says nothing immediate as far as he could see but a proper look and report, at and about, the results will be produced. I have also had a 24hr blood pressure monitor fitted, which is a nuisance but hey ho. The lovely lady who fitted and set it up was a little disconcerted when I joked that I would be fitting it to the dog when I went to bed. Don't you think that Bazile's friend is lucky indeed to have him, and the expert advice given on the Bank.
That LVEF is perfectly acceptable.
Please stop guessing :-( bazile, the patients doctor is the best person to give seek advice/ clarification from.
Anne, may I suggest you get rid of that chip off your shoulder.

Anne, calm down dear, the Med. Sec. has spoken.
may I suggest,,you don't abuse this category for infantile behaviour, sorry B for using your thread .
May I suggest that you stop posting like you're medically trained, NoM.

You're a secretary...
NoMercy....please leave Anneasquith alone.......she cannot help herself as, a past Sister at St Mary's Hospital London ( so she said) she cannot abide to see other people making sensible, realistic and knowledgeable comments about anything medical. She has been the bane of my last 10 years on AB trying to subvert my replies, even on one occasion suggesting that my answer would jeopardize the life of the poster.
She can't help herself, irritating as it may be, just let her comments pass over your shoulders.....as with another ABer.
