My mum is 81 and is not very mobile anymore, so doesn't do enough in the day.

She now has trouble sleeping and has tried most things, even the sleeping pills from the Dr only give her 3 hours and then she's wide awake.

I wondered if a glass of wine might help, what do you think? She's not a big drinker (weddings and parties only)

Or any other suggestions would be welcomed.

Maybe a wee sherry ?
A glass of wine won't make much difference. A bottle might.
Wine doesn't make me sleep but whisky does.
Yes especially a hot whisky with some lemon and sugar for me.
Jack, the lady is not a " big drinker " she'd be up all night at the loo with a bottle of wine .
Red wine seems to help for airline passegers. Or whisky if she can stand the taste of it
I've just made the OH a hot lemon and honey with whisky. With the amount of whisky I put in, he'll be in a catatonic state in under an hour.
melatonin?
Alc is a stimulant in low doses and as said she’d need a large dose to reap the depressant dose which could be dangerous regarding her age and if she’s taken a sleeper with it and has forgotten.

Have you tried l theanine or l tryptophan, I’ve used both in a hot mug of milk before bed with great success.
Unfortunately, the soporific effects of small amounts of alcohol tend to be short-lived so while it might make her go off to sleep in the short-term ,if she awakens from sleeping tablets she is also likely to wake up in the middle of the night after alcohol.
I think it when people have a lot of alcohol that they tend to go to sleep and then wake up again. In my experience, if I give them a couple of glasses of a good red, they tend to be comatose for about 6 hours
^ Lucky things (I forgot to say)
I have been on sleeping tablets (Temazapam) for 8 years, to help me Not, drink. They worked and these days, if I do have a drink with my sleeping pills, they have the exact opposite affect. I always have a lousy nights sleep.

Mixing the two doesn’t work for me.
A drop of sherry might be more suitable..
Give her a glass of wine and see how it goes.
I find a nice mug of hot chocolate always makes me feel sleepy, especially if i put a drop of Baileys in it!
My mums 84 and has got so many health condititions as to be rediciloulous now. If a bottle of wine helped I'd buy it myself...

Thanks for all your suggestions, think I'll have to have another word with her Dr.
This sounds silly, but my grandson doesn't sleep well and the school nurse suggested cherry juice which has something soporific in it. Could be worth a try too.
