My friend had this and it was becoming quite advanced. He received a lung transplant as they felt there was an association between his COPD and his Marfan Syndrome.
COPD is a blanket term for various chronic respiratory diseases and as such can have varying symptoms and requires varying treatments. The most common are chronic bronchitis, emphysema and chronic asthma. I have severe chronic asthma and it is controlled by 1 prednisone (steroid) tablet a day, plus various inhalers and a tablet at night. I don't get chest infections like most people with COPD, but do have permanent chesty cough. I think it's important to know which actual disease you have, as symptoms and treatments will vary, so you may talk to someone also with COPD and wonder why their prescriptions and treatments are different from yours.
I think COPD is not a helpful diagnosis.
