Under what circumstances can a prescription only be issued by a hospital?

A prescription has been issued by a hospital and when in need of replenishment the GP has been unable to do so as it is flagged as red on the system.

Thank you Eleanor, I wonder which applies in this instance???
Snap Buen. It depends what was prescribed Eccles.
Thought it was for highly addictive things - like morphine-based medicines, cannabis (legalised) etc

DTC & Peter Pedant neither scenario applies in this instance.
Sometimes prescriptions that are being used outside of their licence can only be prescribed by consultants. Sometimes prescriptions for things that only the hospital pharmacy cam make can only bever issued by the hospital
My Mum`s anti estrogen drugs that were prescribed by her Oncologist could only be issued by her. The GP wasn't able to issue presciptions.
If you're required to have your bloods monitored and you haven't been doing so, you might get your prescriptions suspended.

To the best of my knowledge none of these scenarios apply either.
experimental drug not yet licensed...?? my ex was prescribed a drug by consultant for a condition in such a manner and he alone could write the repeat script as the drug in question was not licensed...
hi eccles could you not ring the hospital pharmacy to see why you cant get a repeat prescription from your own doctor ( hope your ok) xxx
agree with the above and Chris's et al responses showed a huge range of possibilities - very useful on the subject, so thanks to them.
My daughter had a psychiatric controlled drug for ADHD prescribed by a psychiatrist. Only he could prescribe it until he was happy with the effect and dosage and passed it over to the GP (although we never got that far).

I believe the surgery are contacting the hospital. Pixie your suggestion seems highly probable in this instance.
I was prescribed a drug by the Neurologist at the hospital for Migraines. He would not allow my GP to prescribe on a repeat until he was happy that the dosage was correct and that the drug was not causing any side effects as it is a very powerful drug and the side effects can be quite serious. It could be something like that.
Question Author
Thanks Bagpuss.

It would seem that as this is the first time the patient has had this drug and it is taken in combination with another medication it requires close monitoring to ensure the dosage is correct and there are no side effects. It is unlikely to be handed over to the GP for issue.
