A Very English Scandal

Watched part 2 of this last night and was very disappointed. Looked so promising after an exciting first episode but last night's was just far fetched and boring.

I think it's brilliant Maggie. The only thing that spoilt it a bit was making it a bit of a comedy farce, with the so called assassin and dog incident!

Agree Patsy, that's what put me off. Not much of an assassin and that poor dog.

Last night's episode was indeed very different in tone to the first, simply because the story had moved on - some scenes that appear far fetched did happen.

I am enjoying the series.

The so-called assassin and dog incident is exactly what happened. And don't worry too much about Norman Scott. He was, an doubt remains, the most odious creep I've ever met. He'll be making money out of it all in one way or another, almost certainly from the media aforementioned. Thorpe, by the way, made more than a few quid by having an agency monitor the media even when he was extremely ill. If anyone said, or alluded to, his having a homosexual relationship with Scott he would threaten to sue. As he never acknowledged the fact he was a homosexual predator newspapers (like mine) had to settle out of court. He cost me £10,000 in 1989 though I should not have referred to his having had a homosexual relationship with Scott/Josiffe (although, of course, he did).The Preston book, upon which the series is based, is pretty good. For a more considered and serious version of events highly recommend Jeremy Thorpe by Michael Bloch. By the way, he tried to 'groom' me when I was 14 years old.

What a fascinating insight, Scooping, from someone in the know. By the way, I always thought from the very beginning, long before the scandal broke, that Thorpe was an odious little creep too. You can't libel the dead so I can say that with impunity.

I just found it very strange that a man of Thorpe's standing would have to resort to using such a bumbling, so called assassin. Mind you, he wouldn't have wanted to be in any way associated with it. Won't put me off watching the final episode though.

hereIam, rest assured the dog is fit and well in real life.

We can't change history, the dog was shot and died on the spot and you not watching the programme won't change that fact.

You don't actually see the dog shot, only the killer pointing the gun. The dog is off-camera. The next time you see it it is lying motionless on the ground, obviously very well-trained.

If nothing else, it does show what a wonderful character actor Hugh Grant has become - I think he is totally believable as JT.
