You can't really compare cigarettes with alcohol. You can drink within safe limits but there is no such thing as safe limit of cigarettes - they are all bad for you.

the friends have most probably given them the money to buy cigs x

Yes you are right never thought of that-;)
I have friends that don't smoke so will 'gift' me cigarettes on their return

Cigs Simples, you want Cigs, buy your own, no probs.,
But they’re a lot cheaper in Cyprus, baldric.
I would never ask anyone to bring anything back for me- it's hard enough trying to get your luggage and hand luggage within the weight limits
I wouldn’t either, f-f. Bit cheeky really.

Baldric all I am getting at ,strange to buy cancer sticks for a FRIEND
Would you bring back a bottle of booze for a friend?
Buying to sell when they get home. Shame they do not realise their luggage is xrayed on arrival home and they could be stopped at customs
calmck - Cyprus is an EU country so, in theory, you can bring as many cigarettes as you like into the UK from there. Over a certain quantity customs might query it but that quantity is far more than you could carry yourself (normally applies to people who take a van to Belgium).
jordy, its not up to people to police their friends' behaviour.
Typical EU fascism: allowing people to buy things cheaper than in UK. The sooner we leave, ...

Sorry. I'll shut up now.
The reason JF85 its cheaper elsewhere is because successive UK Governments have increased duty and tax on them - nothing to do with the EU!
It’s not my place to police my friends’ habits. If they want to smoke or overeat, that’s their choice. If someone asked me to bring cigarettes back for them I would.
Anybody who has travelled around Europe will know that some countries derive a lot of their income from selling certain goods (petrol, tobacco, perfume and alcohol ) with very low duty rates to encourage large sales. Beware, though, some of these countries are not in the EU and you are liable to be stopped near the border and quantities checked.
Is this why countries have Embassy fags I is wondering ?
Thanks, Rockrose. My comment was intended as a joke, but it is reassuring to discover I am not the only one who recognises that the EU is not responsible for all the problems in this country, and leaving will not cure them. Your support is appreciated.
I was under the impression that however how many cigarettes you bring into UK (even within the limit allowed)) They had to be for your personal use
Used to bring back ciggies for friends when abroad. Not sure I would do it now. When I worked in Albania, ciggies were about 50p per packet of 20 for an American brand. Limited amount though as Albania not in the EU.
