Baby scan was wrong

We had a baby scan recently and it seemed pretty clear that it was a boy (having something that definitely looked like a you know what where it should be!). However I also had reservations as this tell tale sign seemed a little bright (like a bone would look under ultrasound, not flesh). Has anyone been told it was definitely or very likely a boy only to find out it was a girl? Thx.

I had a little girl, and on the scan you could see little black patches where her ovaries were forming. If your scan has these then it's a girl. Having said that, some scan piccies are too patchy to see clearly. I know that doesn't answer your actual question, but it may help.

My daughter's friend had a private scan, and was told she was having a girl. She already had a boy so was really excited. They did all the nursery out in pink and all the clothes were girly. When the baby arrived, it was a boy. No kidding. You never really know untill it's here.

Colleague's brother was told his wife was having girl. It was a boy. They say the scans are only 95% accurate.

I had a 4D scan at portland street hospital (�140). Its like a full colour video of your insides! Clearly a boy inside me, and everyone who wtched the video at home agreed this was a boy. After having my GIRL!, It took me weeks to stop saying HIM as I had spent so much time thinking I was having a boy.

Apparently, the umbilical cord can get int he way and look like a 'willy' in scans!

My friends say..... if they say you are havng a boy, its possible you are having a girl. but if they say you are having a girl, it WILL be a girl! dunno exactly why this is??

my mum had triplets and they were told they were 3 girls; they turned out as three boys...! however, that was 22 years ago when scaning was just starting out.

I do happen to know that generally ( and this is from a friend who is a sonographer) that when the tell you what gender it is they are actually only looking for female genitalia. If they can see ovaries and labia etc then it is a girl, if they can't see them then they deduce it is a boy. This of course opens up the whole thing for flaw as saying it's a boy is only from things they can't see, not things they can. Hence, babies which have looked like girls, turn out not to be, and babies which looked like Not girls, have turned out to be. It's very confusing.

I think this is the reason why more and more hospitals are refusing to tell you what they think because of the complaints about mistakes...At the end of the day, scans are to pick up anomalies and problems, the sonographer is looking for problems and illnessess. We should just be grateful that this window on the womb is to help the potentially sick babies with life threatening illness and support for mothers who maybe giving birth to a baby that is ill or disfigured. Finding out the baby's sex is fun, but it will always only ever be an educated guess rather than a def answer. I'm just grateful they could take a proper and accurate view of my baby's heart!

Why do you ask? Were you hoping for a girl?

Would love to know what the 4D stands for.

Always thought that knowing the sex beforehand was like going to a football match when you already know the result.

I always thought that they couldn't tell deinately unless it was a boy and it happened to be passing fluid through it's willy as they were watching it on the scan!

Hi, in answer to what I want, I would like a healthy baby, which everything says yes so far. I guess it is logical that people would want a balanced family - 1 girl and 1 boy, but with so much to worry about these days it is just great when things turn out normally. I have a boy already but would love anything that comes out next!

many hospitals won't tell now even if you beg because they often get it wrong and some people are prepared to sue! sad i know that people will sue over the gender of their child, but unfotunately it's true.

Personally, when I was pregnant they knew definately that I was carrying a boy but his twin was shy so they wouldn't even guess! I knew it was a girl but they would never confirm or deny it

I heard that the reason some hospitals won't tell people the sex of their baby is for the sinister reason that a lot of girls were being aborted. It was mentioned in a thread in the 'Emma's Diary' forum.

I work in a 4D ultrasound studio in Nottingham and 90% of mums and dads want to know the sex of their baby. our studio looks at babies sex from 3 angles and explains fully why we think its a boy\girl. we never give a 100%quarante because lots of factors determine the view and as we all know any machine is only as good as its operator, BUT any chance of it being the cord can be sorted by looking at the coloured blood flow .

If your hospital sonographer is nice and gives you her idea of babys sex just remember shes doing it in good faith and would never give out a wrong sex on purpose
