This started about 2 weeks ago, it has got really painful only standing up and lying down relieves the pain, difficult sitting down, thought it was sciatica but doctor seems to think i have pulled a muscle, prescribed Naproxen 250 twice a day and also can take paracetamol.
The pain is excrutiating, dont know what to do for the best, any advice please.

it does sound like sciatica - very painful and the fact you are getting relief lying down relieves the pain. try the tabs first but I know (I have had it) it can be quite a while before it goes away.
Not enough information about the pain.
Does the pain radiate from your buttock down your thigh?
Is the pain in your thigh down the back of the thigh or the outside of the thigh?
Is it correct that the pain is only present when you sit?
Sqad, excuse me butting in (no pun intended) I have a similar pain at the moment except that it starts at a point just above the right buttock ant it is a bit tender to touch.Any advice?
danny...same for you...not enough information.
Does the pain go down the back of the leg or the outside of the leg....or does it stay above the right buttock?
Sqad, stays at the point of origin, but leg feels weak.
OK danny, that doesn't sound like a nerve pain, but more likely musculo-skeletal.
Take Ibuprofen for the pain, or if for reasons of incompatibility, then take Naproxin.
It should settle.
Thanks Sqad :-)
When I had Sciatica, it didn't matter what I did, the pain was fairly relentless. When I pulled a muscle in my thigh, lying down helped, but sitting down was painful. I was told to rest it for 2 weeks, then I was given exercises, but the pain lasted about 5 months. With Sciatica I had to exercise as much as possible, but that lasted 8 months. Painkillers were more effective with pulled thigh muscle than with Sciatica. My advice is prepare for the long haul- but it may be neither complaint and you may recover quickly.

Sqad, the pain seems to start near the coccyx, travels across the bottom and down thigh to knee, doesnt hurt to walk ,but feels easy standing or lying sitting in nearly any position is very painful.
Thanks catswhisks, you still didn't answer if the pain went down the back of the thigh or the outside, but never mind.
It doesn't sound like sciatica and I agree with your doctor in that it sound more like a muscular problem.
2 weeks is rather a long time for a muscular problem, so I feel that it is a matter of monitoring the situation for a further week and continuing the medication prescribed by your GP.If there is no improvement after that, then see you GP again.
If it is muscular then a hot water bottle might help with the pain

Okay thank you all pain goes down front of thigh sqad, have an appt for 5th July ,its just doesn't matter what i take the pain doesn't lessen .
Must be common. I can get such pains running down the outside thigh every now and again. Doctor suggested being overweight was trapping the nerve. It does seem to be less regular/common when I'm lighter, but that may be me simply finding what I'm expecting and looking for.
