NAILIT did you say on another post that you are drinking 9 or 10 pints a night?
Maybe I read it wrong I hope I did because surely you would be unfit to drive next morning

Darceyk123,exactly what I was on about nailit loves that job ,if he was breathalised morning after surely he would be over the limit, maybe someone on here who he would listen to should have a word with him.
Depends what time he starts work.
Anne - they’re grafters, so I reckon between 3 and 4pm
Jordy, thanks for post.
I never said 9 or 10 pints. I said the equivalent (i.e 18 units). But that might have been a slight exaggeration. Its actually 17 units!! Maybe a bit more at weekends and I do have dry nights as well.
before I go any farther, Im well aware of what people may think of me - Alkie, Wino, Waster, Selfish, Sponger, Self pityer, (add your own derogative term) - had it all my life so water off a ducks back to me now. The fact is I have a drink problem (never liked the term alcoholic, too many negative connotations). Some people have eating problems, gambling problems, porn addictions, nicotine addictions, drug addictions..both prescribed drugs and illicit drugs etc, I have a drink problem! I don't ask for sympathy, its my own demons I have to fight.

As regards been over the limit the following morning. I know how many units Im consuming and how long its in my system for. Ive held a clean license for 32 yrs and have no intention of jeopardizing it or causing an accident whereby someone innocent gets harmed.
I get to work at nine, spend time loading my van etc, cup of tea and start driving from 10.
If I have my first drink at 5pm (can of lager/4 units) and half bottle of vodka (13 units) its all out of my system by the time I start driving the following day.

(I'll now wait for the self righteous comments from the holier than thou's on this site)

Thanks for post Jordy ;-)

I'm not trying to make any self-righteous comments but the training we were given when I worked on the railways was that the number of hours it takes for alcohol to clear a person's system is roughly equal to the number of units consumed, with the clock starting 1 hour after the last drink has been taken. (That training was backed up by references to research findings that are widely recognised).

So, based upon that training, anyone consuming 17 units of alcohol need to allow 18 hours after consuming his last drink before driving (or, as in our case, working on a railway station).

The basic 'units = hours' rule seems to be backed up by this NHS page, which says that the alcohol in a large (3 unit) glass of wine takes about 3 hours to clear, 1 pint of 'basic' beer (2 units) takes 2 hours and 1 pint of stronger beer (3 units) takes 3 hours:
https://www.nhs.uk/common-health-questions/lifestyle/how-long-does-alcohol-stay-in-your-blood/
I didn't realise a can of lager was so many units.
Chris - it's the same advice my partners firm gives and they have random drink and drugs tests.
^ depends on the strength of the lager, one of my favourites is 9%
//I'm not trying to make any self-righteous comments//
LOL, you are one of the least judgemental people on this site Chris, couldn't take any comment you make as self righteous if I tried!!!
^^^ It's either a very big can or very strong lager, Ummmm!

A 500ml can (which is generally the largest size available for most brands) of a strongish lager (at 5% abv) will have 2.5 units of alcohol in it. The same size can of a 'basic' lager (at 3.6% abv) will have 1.8 units in it. However if Nailit is drinking Tennent's Super (at 8% abv) then, as he states, a 500ml can will have 4 units of alcohol in it.
//I didn't realise a can of lager was so many units//
Lynx premium. 3.75 %

What you said earlier ummmm about tolerance etc always gets me as well. I DO seem to have a high tolerance for chemicals. If I have to have a tooth filling, invariably I have to have extra anesthetic. When I was in the funny farm a couple of years ago I was on tranqualisers, other drugs with a sedative side affect AND sleeping tablets. The first few nights I slept for 2-4 hours until they upped my sleepers.
always been the same. Just seem to have a high tolerance to chemical of any kind. Had a blood test a couple of months ago, my liver results came back normal despite the fact that Id been hammering it over 50+ yrs.
>>> Lynx premium. 3.75 %

A 3.75% lager has, by definition, 3.75% units of alcohol in 1 litre. So a 500ml can will have half that number of units (1.9 units, to 1 d.p.) and a 440ml can will have 1.7 units (to 1 d.p.)
Years ago, ex brother in law got pulled and breathalysed at 9.30 am. Failed due to night before drinking. Banned one year. Another ex brother in law had just drank four pints and three scotches and got pulled leaving the pub,
He passed the test. He was quite surprised. Go figure.
Buen, my mistake
Its 3.75 UNITS per can (not %)
As stated on the can.

This is why a 'one size fits all' critique doesn't work dave?
Different metabolisms, size, sex, weight etc (as pointed out by ummm earlier)
Ive just drank 17 units and feel sober as a judge (though Im aware that I wouldn't be fit to drive)
Just want my supper and go to bed. When I shall probably be awake again at 2 in the morning and waiting for my day to start :-(
Your strange sleep patterns are probably caused by alcohol, Nails. A deep, alcohol induced sleep for three/four hours then wakefulness for the rest of the night.

Just saying.
//Your strange sleep patterns are probably caused by alcohol//
Tills,
If medically induced sedatives, tranqualisers, and sleeping tablets only gave me 2 hours sleep at night, then I would question that.
I have gone months sober and not slept for more than a few hours at a time. Its agonising (ask Smow).
When Ive been on a high dose of zopiclone, I havnt even wanted a drink...just a good nights sleep
This perplexes me. Part time job topped up by benefits. How do you afford to drink 17 pints and half a bottle of vodka several nights a week? I get the impression that you think the benefits system is inadequate. That doesn’t make sense.
O.K., Nails. I was trying to offer a reason for your insomnia. It just shows that I know 'nuffin'.
Since I retired, I have absolutely no problems sleeping. When I was working, I knew what the problem was. So, actually, I have no experience of insomnia apart from stress induced disturbance.
I wish you a good night's sleep.
