tooth ache

does anyone have any advise for tooth ache ? I am climbing the walls. my dentist has discovered what he thinks is the cause, some decay beneith a crown. but can not fit me in for two weeks as it needs a 45 min appointment. I have begged and pleaded but he insist's he can't see me before this. I have taken all the strong over the counter stuff but nothing touches it, I went to my doctor today as my back has been giving me trouble too. she gave me diclofenic 50mg three times a day and said I can also take ibruprofen at six hourly intervals. so far I have had one dose of each but I am still climbing the walls...Help

this is going to sound awful in a way.... I really don't have a solution for your pain but I just felt so sorry for you when I read your post :o(

I'll have a mooch around online n' see if I can find anything - something I'm sure you're already doing but if we both look, we just might find something sooner!!

Have you tried your local hospital or out of hours medical service? They should have an emergency dental clinic.

If you can get something onto/into the decayed area, then a small amount of whiskey, vodka, brandy etc swilled around that area is a great help.. or warm very salty water. A sore cavity can be stuffed with bread to keep the cold air out.

would you be able to put oil of cloves on it?it does deaden the pain.i know what raging toothache is like...i would phone every morning till your appointment just in case someone else has cancelled a legnthy appointment. good luck x

unfortunately pain killers is the only answer, give the new tablets a bit longer to work ( speaking as a nurse ). The only way to get rid of it is to go to the dentist, but to have to wait 2 weeks is a killer. Some people suggest whiskey, but sounds like you would need a whole bottle. You're dentist should have emergency appointments, perhaps you should shed a few tears to try and get in. Private dentists will get you seen quicker but you will have to take out a mortgage to pay the bill. Hope that you can get sorted soon

I see someone has said to try the local hospital, but I work in an A&E dept. and hospital Doctors will not treat you, it has to be a dentist

all I've managed to come up with guichard.... is the warm salt water rinse as honkytonk mentioned or oil of cloves..already mentioned too.

Thanks everyone. I've tried just about everything I think. The whisky one sounds nice and I have to say I had a good few on Saturday night and the pain didn't come but thought it was just wishfull thinking. will get some tomorrow and try rubbing it on the area that the dentist thinks is the problem. I've tried rubbing on sensodyne too. don't have any cloves, will try the salt water though. thanks again to you all. Think it's going to be a long night AGAIN !

In reply to nurse1967. I didn't know if guichard's local hospital had an emergency dental clinic. Our's is called Dentaline and you go to A & E to be seen. But I guess not every Health Authority may have this.

I don't think a dentist has any right to refuse you treatment if you are registered with them. If you insist they have to see you as an emergency like any GP would. They might charge you an emergency fee but if you're in that much pain surely it's all worth it.

This is unless you're not a regular attendee and only go when you have pain and not for your regular 6 months check up. In that case I'm sorry to say it's your own fault.

For the dentist to say it'll take 45 mins and he/she can't see you for 2 weeks because of it is ridiculous. He can do something for you in 15 mins to relieve the pain. If there's a cavaty under your crown he can take the crown off, drill the decay out and put a temporary filling in there until your proper appointment.

To me it sounds more like what happens so often with crowns that are not kept properly clean, is that the decay has been eating away and has gone as far as it has now caused an abcess and you need that drained or antibiotics to feel better. When you've tried lots of painkillers and they don't work, it's more than likely an abcess.

Your dentist should be at least seeing you to give you a 'quick fix' so to say until your next appointment. I would go to the surgery and refuse to leave if I was you or go to a different surgery.
