No, a family member (no pun) has had this done and apparently you pop in to hospital for a day they make you numb down below do some scissor work and within a few hours you are walking home. No hob-nobbing with the missus for about a week and then back to (relative) normality. The place you have it done should offer:
consultation/counselling
procedure
aftercare
follow-up semen testing and results.

Both my Father and my boyfriend have had the snip. They experienced a couple of days of pain but no more than that.
One thing my boyfriend did say is that there are several ways of doing it. Mango Pete voiced concerns - my boyf had the vas cut and then the ends folded back on themselves and sewn so they couldn't rejoin.
Don't know if this is common practice - maybe he could discuss this with the doc.
It is great not to have to worry about contraception and neither of the men in my life has ever had any regrets - isn't it great to be able to talk so openly with your Dad about such things!!!
you normally have a local for this, not a general unless there is a special reason. My hubby had a local, and a slight complication in as much as it was deeper than the surgeon reckoned and took some digging and delving, but it was still fine, see my previous post...
as an aside:
He was very good about not complaining about having it done seeing as I had had a c-section under general and ended up in intensive care 2 months before!!!! ahhh what a sweet heart. he had it done for me, so i would never risk my life like that again (or maybe he just couldnt bear the thought of me dying and leaving him with 6 kids! a snip seemed like the lesser of the two evils...;-)
tradey - looking at all the posts above, I think most of the 'bad' experiences seem to have occurred some time ago. I am sure things must have improved since then, so why don't you have another look at the guidance pages on the Marie Stopes website (including the link I gave above) here: chopchop
Of course, you will hear about breast ops going wrong, bad experiences at the dentist etc, but these are facts of life and although unfortunate, do occur. I hope if this is what you and your partner decide to do that everything works out for you both with no complications. Your partner shouldn't be shy in having a chat with a doctor/specialist as it is a very common procedure these days.
my husbands 'wound' was less than a cm long. He didn't have any stictches, just a pressure dressing that you leave on for 24 hours. Honestly, google for the Marie stopes clinic in Uk, find one near you, read the PDF leaflet and give them a call. It is relatively cheap, it's a private hospital and you can schedule it for when you like...
It'll be fine and as you say, it is such an unecessary risk for you to take with another general. He doesn't need nearly the same, just a local, 'a little prick' haha and bob's your uncle......
