//The BCG vaccine gives immunity to tuberculosis, but mass vaccination was dropped in the UK in 2005 when rates of the lung infection dropped.

Yet US-based experts now think the vaccine could improve immune systems and protect people from infection.

New research, which is yet to be peer reviewed, suggests that countries with widespread BCG vaccination programmes have much lower rates of the coronavirus than nations without.//

I saw something about this a few weeks ago. Excuse my ignorance but it this the vaccine that leaves a scar on your arm?
*is, not it
Question Author
Yes, it does, Tigger. Nothing awful though. Just a small scar.
Interesting.

Is Germany one of those countries?
Good news for me, but sadly my wife was never inoculated. Her Dad didn't want her to have it. Crazy.
I remember it well. A little test first that consisted of a little circle of pin pricks on your inner arm just above the wrist. Then an injection in the upper arm after the reaction to the test was analysed. Left you with a blister that went a nasty colour and an arm that ached for days. We .....as you do.....went around for a couple of weeks punching each other on the arm. I think that we would have been locked up if we were in school now.
Haha "She who must be obeyed" and I are looking for the scar and relating stories about the time. We reckon that we were probably about 11 years old. Probably first year in secondary school.
I didn't have my bcg until I was in my 30s and working on a chest ward.... That's good to know
Very interesting as it is lung related. May be the case for some who have had mild symptoms and protect it from infecting the lungs or are asymptomatic.
Another thing I heard was , if you’ve had to go out, leave a hairdryer plugged in at your front door and turn in on your face, the virus can’t survive in the heat generated by the drier
Oh I've had that inoculation. Maybe it's part of the reason why I don't seem to have caught the virus yet.
How cooked does your face need to get. Rare, medium, or well done ?
I never had that but most other kids did, I was confused at the time but they said I didn't need it but I was too young to really comprehend the reason. I remember the circle scar the other kids had I didn't have that. Any experts on here tell me why? I have the polio thing on the sugar lump, I think that had other vaccines on it too.
Gosh Soxy, I'm already ugly enough without heating up my gob !
But this would mean that older people are more protected. My children, all in their 30s were not given the bcg at school because tb was thought to have been eradicated.
I guess acupuncture and Chinese medicine didn't work in Wuhan.
Tora x3 you probably had a strong reaction to the skin test, probably due to exposure to tb but not infection, quite common back in the day. Happened to me at school age, was re -tested for work and as I said needed the vaccination in my 30s
There could be a correlation but of course there may not be any cause and effect- it could be for all sorts of other reasons such as relative poverty levels or hygiene standards in some countries.
But if we only stopped in 2005 in UK then surely almost all those suffering from it are aged over 60 rather than under 15 and therefore had the vaccination? Or does it wear off- I don't know.
Is jim around? Or PP?
TTT, some people are naturally immune to it, which is why there is a skin test first. My friend didn't need one either. The vaccination was changed by the time I had it and no longer leaves scars.
Correlation is not causation and there will need to be a lot more analysis to determine if there is a link.
