I've heared the plaintive call of the cuckoo, deep within the woods, twice today, first time this year (at least for me any way). Seems a bit late to me, considering I would normally expect to hear the cuckoo call around mid April.
So what do you think of its chances, finding a mate, finding a suitable nest to lay an egg in and finally getting back to Africa on time ?.

The cuckoo comes in April Sings her song in May Changes tune in the middle of June And July she flies away I heard one only last week for the first time in years, it's only the beginning of June, hopefully all is still OK.

If it's the only one calling it's unlikely,
Perhaps it was saying goodbye, Chip.

I don't think so Tilly, according to the song "June, she'll change her tune". She was definitely calling for a mate.
I hope her mate hasn't been killed. Poor thing.

I've been hearing it every day since, hope it finds a mate.
Although its a parasite, laying its egg in another birds nest and ejecting the eggs and young from it, it would be a shame if they rare or in danger of extinction.

Became rare^^
Chippy. The song you heard is from a male. The female has a bubbling call.
