And, in any case, the argument is fundamentally broken. People die all the time, but we still have hospitals, because society as a rule doesn't like people to die without having tried to stop it. When something rolls around that appears to threaten to kill people even faster still, Society is bound to respond to that.

I'm not convinced that "don't see this fuss for flu" is either entirely correct or indeed the right lesson to draw. When the flu gets bad (ie the 1918 flu), the world saw the same response (right down to the denial and conspiracy theories), tempered maybe a little by the end of the War and the fear that bad news was not what many countries wanted to hear. Moreover, isn't it worth while to take seriously threats to health that cause people to die in larger numbers than are strictly necessary? If, as here, it's causing (many) people to be more conscious about their hygiene, etc, I'd expect that to be a long-term positive.
Just as real as all the other nasty/deadly viruses out there I'm afraid.Sadly the over-reaction and failure to protect the infirm and the disregard to all other suffering people will certainly add to an ever growing death total.
Hopefully lessons will be learnt and we will all be prepared for pt II when it comes round.
