to get a full nights sleep
I have been waking up to 5 times a night for over a month or more.

i have no problem going to sleep, its just after two hours im awake, feeling as though i was suffocating. Any physical reasons for this.

anyone else care to share their sleepless tales. and how they may have conquered them. I have spoken with doctor but she seems to
think it might be nasal drip, causing me to cough, though i don't know if that is right.
bad dreams, needing the loo all come into play as well.

That scuppers my thought of an allergen in your bedroom.
It's quite normal for me to wake up 4 or 5 times a night, usually to go to the loo. I can't remember the last time I slept right through so I don't let it bother me. I remember you saying that you've been in bed by 9 o'clock perhaps you should go to bed later.
Emmie, amitriptyline is also a pain killer and can make you drowsy. That is why I had it prescribed and it helped me to sleep.

doesn't matter if i go to bed at midnight i wake with a start after just a few hours each time
I have suggested on previous posts that you try a natural melatonin. I take it as I was waking up and unable to get back to sleep. Now I wake only once or twice and am back to sleep in about 10 minutes
Can you suggest things to your GP? I know I have said it before on here but one year after a cold, I was left with a really bad wake up fighting for breath nighttime cough. I went to the GP and he eliminated chest infection and so on and said there was quite a bit of it around that year and they were prescribing ventolin to treat the fighting for breath symptoms. Once I had got the inhaling and puffing at the same time thing sorted it took about 5 days to work completely and (touching wood) I have never needed it since.

can suggest things to GP woof. But thought would gauge AB for any thoughts.
Are you actually tired when you go to bed or just bored? Are you getting some fresh air and exercise every day?
I wonder if a small something to eat might help. A couple of biscuits if you can manage them or a little bit of banana. Maybe not milk I suppose as that might not suit the nasal drip problem.
But sometimes something on the stomach can settle me down

yes I realise that. I am aware that prescribing ventolin when the person doesn't have a diagnosis of asthma is a bit off the wall which is why I asked whether your GP might consider it.

tired out when go to bed sherr. Had three weeks where felt unwell.
didn't venture out because of it, except to get various Nytol, Night Nurse.

will consider it woof.

perhaps i should give in and accept that age is playing it's part.
but i haven't had too much of a problem in the past with sleeping straight through.
Both Nytol and Night Nurse have ingredients in which will dry out your mouth and nasal tissues. If you have a dry cough already then drying out your nose and throat won't help at all.

i tried both on advice from abers and doctor, they didn't help with sleeping.
I have sleep issues too sometimes. I think attitude can help a bit. If I can't sleep or wake up in the night and can't settle then I read or watch junk TV, share a night time snack with the dog and generally do quiet fun stuff. If I need to nap the next day then I do. At very least it takes my mind of the thoughts that disturb my sleep and it also takes away the stress of "I can't sleep and I should be able to" Did you know that expecting to sleep through the night is a comparatively modern thing?
this article talks about how to maintain biphasic sleep which you don't need or want but there is also information about the history of it and how normal it is. https://www.sciencealert.com/humans-used-to-sleep-in-two-shifts-maybe-we-should-again

woof, i can go back to sleep quite quickly, but then the whole process starts again. Perhaps i should accept that this is just another phase
Many many people would love to have 6 hours straight sleep. However they don’t and they accept it. My sympathy goes to anyone who is unable to sleep because of worry, pain, homelessness,. Try accepting you will nap during the day and sleep as much as you can at night. Your body is obviously getting enough sleep/rest .
Emmie, I would definitely try sleeping a bit more upright, more pillows, to help the drip and the breathing.
