14 stones isn't bad is it bob?
Why do you want to lose weight..health? vanity?
Don't go on a diet.....they don't work
Just eat smaller portions at each meai.
Water? Forget it, that won't help at all in losing weight.
Cut down on the alcohol.......
Come back to AB in 6 months time and post again.
Recommended amount of water is 8 glasses per day. It takes a bit of effort at first but you will gradually get used to it.That won't help you lose weight but it keeps you hydrated. I would ring your GP for guidance on losing weight.
Why can't people simply drink water when they feel like it? And who is it who determines the recommended amount of water to drink? And what is a glass? And how much water do people get from other food and drinks?
eat less move more.
Well said Atheist.
8 glasses a day is a guess. Drink until your pee is clear. Water is also good for your skin.

I agree with Sqad about the dieting. Just eat less but don't deny yourself too much or you will fail.

But 14 stone doesn't seem too bad.
How tall are you, bob?
I’d never be able to leave the house due to needing to pee, if I drank eight glasses of water on top of my normal food and fluid intake!
A glass is 1/2 pint.
vagus the "8 glasses" thing is an estimate designed to give a target to folk who don't drink enough for whatever reason. It INCLUDES all non alcohol fluids, also wet food like juicy fruit or jelly. Its also not suitable for everybody like "5 a day" which my digestion would not cope with.
danny; but it's also the case that we get water from other sources than a glass. I doubt if water is harmful in moderation, but there have been cases of people overdoing it. I still don't see why we can't get along as we have done for millenia by drinking when we feel we need it.
I'll pitch in with my usual advice. But first I'll say...don't expect to weigh what you did 40 odd years ago. It's an unrealistic goal for the most part.
I'd say don't eat less...eat differently. Cut out starchy carbs...bread and grains*, rice, pasta, beer. Eat plenty of good protein such as chicken, oily fish, eggs, some dairy, leafy green veg...maybe some nuts or seeds. Use olive oil, or a bit of butter...actually better than fake vegetable spreads. Get creative and use herbs of spices for variety. Eat 2 or 3 meals a day...eat until you are satisfied.
* think of it this way, grains are fed to livestock to fatten them up.
As others say, drink when you are thirsty.
Yep, I know that woofy.
Some would say I should up my fluid of any description per day...one and a half mugs of coffee in the morning, a very small glass of fresh orange with lunch so I can take my pills, a cup of tea mid afternoon, and half a glass of water after evening meal to take more pills.
A pear, nectarine or small handful of grapes with lunch, and whatever veggies in the evening.
And I pee for England!
My mum has lost quite a lot of weight, not that she needed to, by just giving up sugar.

She walks loads as well...so she's also toned.
I was told to avoid caffeine so I only have 1 small coffee a day.

That could be for a completely different reason though.
Only drink water when you are not thirsty if it makes you happy - your body will tell you when you need it. Forcing yourself to drink water amounts to self-torture. Your urine is only clear if you have drunk more water than you need, when normal it is naturally at least pale yellow as seen in the toilet. There are lots of magic solutions toward perfect health suggested, one of them to drink pure water (i.e. not as part of the food you consume) for its own sake (detox, blah de blah) - that one does not work. As for the weight loss, TTT delivered the most succinct and relevant advice.
