\\My dentist tells me that the cheapest own brand toothpaste is just as effective as the top of the range expensive toothpaste, but both are only any good if you brush your teeth properly twice a day with a toothbrush that isn't worn out.///
No they are not, I take part studies and trials of different toothpastes and they are all different.

I would say it's worth it. That price isn't too bad. They can get rid of stubborn stains from tea and coffee. My hygienist uses a water jet to get rid of them. You could try it once to see what it's like? I go once a year to the dentist and hygienist at my dentist's recommendation. I know some people who go every six months and I would say that is when people are wasting money - if they go more often than what the dentist advises.
Until fairly recently dentists used to give me a scale & polish as part of a check--up. Now they just have a quick look & say "teeth are fine but you should see the hygienist". Sometimes I do sometimes I don't, depends if my teeth feel mucky or not. I do clean at least twice a day with an electric brush.
Our dentist had to finish a while ago. After a year or so I managed to get a new dentist. This one said that I needed Route canal work a couple of fillings and that I needed to see the dental hygienist at the practice. Before I had this done my old dentist started up again so went back to him. He said the only work needed was a very small filling and that the cleaning that the hygienist would do was part of the routine checkup. About 8 years now since the change back and still only that one filling and I did have to ahve a tooth out but that was because it cracked right through the middle. So to answer the question I would think they are ripping you off.
Kitty Glitter. I use Eucryl tooth powder to remove tea stains about once a week. It's a lot cheaper than a hygienist. It used to be called Smokers tooth powder and has been around for at least a century.

Thank you to everyone who,s given there advice/opinion. there are a lot of valid points made. looks like in his opinion i should have a full session at £62, other option is £32. i don,t believe my teeth to be that bad, as one person said it,s a money spinner.!
i brush twice a day, electric, floss, don,t smoke or drink coffee. i think i,ll wait a year or so. thanks for your replies.

I visited the hygienist last year, when visiting the dentist was a scary thing to do. Some of my teeth had got very dirty – no idea why, but I think it might have been the brand of mouthwash I was using! They weren’t allowed to use the normal drills, and had to use the handheld ones instead. They did a completely amazing job. Worth every penny. I recommend using The old fashioned drills. They are less painful as well!
