Contraceptive coil

Hi all

I'm having the coil fitted for the first time on Thursday (period permitting) I have been told it will be uncomfortable afterwards for a little while, but will I feel any sharp pains whilst it is being fitted? or will it be a bit like having a smear? I'm not bothered if it is uncomfortable I just want to be ready for anything really. Any experiences welcome please as I am starting to get a bit anxious about it.

from memory the whole process is pretty painless. I am a nightmare with smears and was terrified at the thought of having a coil put in, but I gritted my teeth and to me it was about the same as a smear. I have a mirena coil and it's fantastic, I had spotting for about a month after it was fit, now I do not bleed at all - the reason I had it put in!

From what I remember it isn't pleasant but no more than that.

Take a couple of painkillers an hour or so before, will help to ease discomfort and will relax you.

I had three put in at various times- one was terrible - like being kicked in the stomach by a horse, the other two were uncomfortable but pain free - a bit like having a smear test.

I'd listen to the advice to take a couple of paracetamol about an hour before your appointment. Tell the doctor you're anxious about it - they will do all they can to help minimise the stress for you.

I'm definatly going to take the advice and have a couple of paracetamols before hand. I feel a bit more at ease now hearing from others
