i do admire any man who in the face of extreme provocation can hold to the 'you should never hit a woman' rule

however, i do think women can sometimes push the limits somewhat...and if i ever hit a fella, i wouldn't do so without the expectation of being hit back!

In principle, I agree that a man should never hit a woman, except in self defence. If she is a real rough type and comes at you with a knife, than it's better for both of them if the man knocks her to the ground, than end up losing his life, and her in jail. There are, sadly, men who have been killed by women because they stuck to their principles to the detriment of their own well being. But, in general, there is no reason why a man (or a woman) should use violence towards the opposite sex.

Well said woofgang - that's a good general principle. I have never hit a woman although I did once, under severe provocation, throw a drink (not the glass!) into a girl's face and it eventually ended in hugs and laughter. I've never been hit by a woman although a girlfriend once smashed a half bottle of whisky over my head - what a waste of whisky!

I tend to compartmentalise my approach in these type of altercations....in the traditional pub / football / street environments of aggravation, Lennox Lewis / Mike Tyson style of hitting should prevail. In the more domestic setting, a Jerry Springer type backhander should usually suffice when putting your woman in her place....anyway gotta go put the dinner on, I can hear her key in the door !

I'm a very big powerfully built man aged 57 and the last time I hit someone was when I was at school.

I can think of a reason to hit a woman, for example if she was insane and coming at you with a butchers knife to kill you, that would be a fair reason to deck her,

but under normal circumstances there should never be a reason for a man to hit a woman, in the same way that a man should never hit a child
