Have You Had A Hip Replacement?

A few days ago I suddenly got a pain from my groin to my knee, which feels like muscle strain. When I sit down, I can't lift my right foot off the floor. I've had a lot of knee problems, but this is new. My sister said this was exactly what happened to her and she needed a new hip. Do you know anyone who's had a hip replacement, and what their symptoms were? Or what this could be if it's not a dodgy hip?

Did your sister not have a new hip then?

Try talking to a doctor, much more likely to know than keyboard  diagnosticians.

Could be DVT I suppose.

Yes I've had a hip replacement.

Although I know pain in the groin is very often caused by hip joint wearing it wasn't the case for me.

I seemed to be ok one day, then suddenly my hip became very, very painful, virtually overnight.

Like many health problems no 2 people that same.

I hope your pain settles soon.

Yes my sister had the hip replacement but it took the docs three years to diagnose since her pain was in her knee and leg!

Thanks Buen, don't think it's foot drop as I can move foot fine, just can't lift the leg! And yes it came on suddenly overnight.

My other hip is starting to grumble. The first op was a total success, with little post op pain.

I have had 3 hip ops and will probably need the 4th this year.

Groin and thigh pain are symptoms but, as others have said, get a diagnosis.

^Four hip operations? Presumably the cat?

I've had a hip replacement. It started with discomfort/ pain in the hip and then I was just walking across the lawn and something (cartilage)just 'went' and the joint was bone on bone. The operation was successful but the same thing has happened to my knee on the same leg so I'm waiting for a replacement knee. They can't say how long the wait will be.......apart from months

I've had both mine replaced. Took three years for them to decide, I never had groin pain just a gradual ache in hip which got worse, and then eventually it would give way.

I had a hip replacement in 2011. I'd had severe pain in the groin for quite some time and was convinced it was ligaments or some form of muscular complaint. It was very difficult driving, as it was in my right groin and I could barely move my foot from one pedal to the other. When I was told I needed a hip replacement I was totally shocked but I managed to get it done very quickly on the NHS as I had no underlying health problems. I was 63 at the time.

It all went well and I was back at work after 3 months and back playing golf after 4 months. But the initial diagnosis was a big shock, as I said.

First hip replacements are routine ops especially nowadays. I had my first two done 20+ years ago. Replaced one 7 years ago and been on crutches ever since. Not looking forward to when other will need replacing. They normally last about 15 years. The left one is now 23 years old.

Same as you clarionst, back to the gym within 3 months.

I slipped and thought I had pulled a groin muscle. Ended up at physio and she said that is a classic sign of problems with the hip which xray confirmed. I have had new hip for 14 months, for me the operation was great and fantastic to be out of pain. The worst bit, all the restrictions of  movement while recovering - not being able to bend down, twist etc. Had to learn how to put on underwear with a grabber and shoe horn but all this was explained to me.

Thanks everyone, very useful and interesting. I will try and get an x-ray of my hip from my GP this week if possible. It doesn't seem to be getting any better, as much as I would like to hope it was a pulled muscle or something similar.
