OOWWWW!!!!!

For the last week, I've had the worst ever pain in the side of my face/jaw/neck/ear, I've tried every type of painkiller I can think of but they haven't really helped.....It is much worse at night when I lie down (3am painkillers don't help either!!). The only thing that seems to help is heat or a steaming with a bowl of hot water, but it comes back as soon as I take the heat away!!

I haven't been able to get a doctors appt, but I'll try again on Monday, in the meantime, What can I do? - it's completely excruciating, I feel like crying & want to chop my ear off!!!

Do you think it could be a ear infection, dental abcess or sinus problem - should I go for appt with GP or Dentist first?

Go to the Drs first....it sounds like it could be either an ear infection or sinusitus.

You will almost certainly be prescribed antibiotics for both.

I've never had an ear infection although my wife has one at the moment but i've had sinus problems and Oh my god did that hurt.......i was almost suicidal with the pain.

You might be able to get some decongestant from the chemist....but they will be best to give advice for short term relief.

Try a steam inhalation with Olbas Oil and hot water with the good old towel over your head. Also you can buy Beconase over the counter now and that reduces the swelling up your hooter thus releasiny the pressure which cause the excrutiating pain of sinusitis.I have had chronic sinusitis for years - I never get the cold - it never gets to the stage of the crusty nose in the morning - cos its blocked in my sinuses:)

Earache usually-but not always manifests itself in discomfort in swallowing as the mastochian tubes are all interlinked.

Either way you do need an anti I suspect - watch for the Doxycyclin (a green one) for sinusitis - take it but if you get a reaction of any kind stop and either see your Pharmicist or GP.I am not scaremogering but it is powerful and I know of a lot of people who have had adverse reactions.

What a concise answer - I dont half rattle on:)

You will be better soon-promise.Just feel sorry for yourself in the meantime - it works for me!!

I have had problems with sinus for years but yours does not sound like it, it does seem more likely to be ear or tooth problems. Can you get anti inflammatory drugs without a prescription where you are? if so try to get some Ibuprofen 200mg, take no more than an absolute maximum per day of 1200mg in 3 or 4 divided doses after meals.
I was in appaling pain over xmas (started xmas eve!) for 1 week. (toothache) the only painkiller (and i tried the lot) that worked was NUROFEN PLUS go buy some now. Go to NHS walk in centre if gp wont see u or dentist. Or phone nhs direct NOW on 0845 46 47 . they will give 24 hour advice. good luck. I sympathise.
I get otitis externa which causes this when it gets infected. Its an outer ear infection and it is sometimes very difficult to tell where it hurts. i got this at the weekend the first time it happened, I phoned nhs direct and they got mr in touch with the out of hours doctors who treated me. I needed antibiotics and if i had waited much longer i would have had to have a drain in the side of my face.
I agree, you must go to the doctor and possibly get antibiotics. Good luck.
It could be your wisdom tooth, I've experianced such pain and it effects the whole side of your face.
I am suffering from an ear infection with a sinus infection. I had a cold last week and it went away too fast. The Dr. said that the drainage went to my ear tubes, which caused an ear infection. I am on antibiotics, with a prescribed sudafed pill and nasal spray. You need to go to the Dr.s. My pain is so bad, I take motrin and use heat at night, which helps alot.
Toothache usually refers to pain around the teeth
or jaws. The most common cause of a toothache
is a dental cavity and the inflammation of the
pulp(pulpitis) Sometimes a toothache may be
due to non-dental reasons like infection of the
ears and sinus. If a tooth is affected home
remedies like clove oil can provide temporary relief,.

Do you have a cavity? Because it sounds like the same thing I'm going through. I have a cavity and its so bad I have to have a root canal. When it starts to hurt my ear and the side of my face starts to hurt too. Its the side in which the cavity is on, which happens to be my right. And if I lie down it does make it worse so I always gotta sit up. I wake up during the middle of the night in pain, there are times when I wake my mom up. The pain is so bad I cry sometimes. And I'm 16.
