I was injured in a car accident last year and have since suffered from chronic whiplash. I have recieved piankillers of every stregth from my doctor. The strongest ones do relieve the pain but they knock me for six and I am unable to do anything, and any of the weaker ones have little effect. I regularly attend physiotherapy, and the symtoms are relieved for a short while afterwards, but not long term. I have been advised to take regular exercise, which does work but only if I spend at least an hour a day exercising, which I often do not have time for. I am not looking for a miracle cure, just advice on how to temporarily relieve the pain when it comes on unexpectidly.

Two suggestions for you:

1. Go back to your doctor and ask to be referred to a specialist pain relief clinic at your local hospital. If you can get such a referral, you'll find that the staff at the clinic might have various suggestions that neither you nor your GP have yet thought of.

2. Investigate the possibility of getting hold of a TENS unit. These devices work by electrically stimulating the nerves and suppressing pain. Your doctor might know something about them but you might be able to get more information by consulting a pharmacist. (Pharmacists are a frequently overlooked source of medical advice. Within certain fields, they're far better qualified to provide assistance than any GP).
