there are certain phrases i wish to irradicate from society as they have no use except to annoy me

"To Be Honest" why oh why unless your a pathological liar do you need to tell me that you are about to be honest? its as if everything you have said before that was a lie and only now are they about to tell the truth. in the same vain

"to be fair" again is the person saying this in some way unfair? and again they are saying that to let you know on this instance they are going to be fair??

but by far the worst is "at the end of the day" yes because after that whatever they say only applies at midnight? listen to people who use this phrase, most of them morons. this phrase at least can be used in a proper sentence but i have only ever heard it used once properly. please someone agree with me?

they're space fillers; people say them automatically while they devote their conscious mind to formulating the next sentence they speak. If they didn't do it they'd probably say er or um a lot, or just leave gaps in the conversation. Try not to take them personally, they aren't meant that way.

yes and thats what i hate. they are said by people who like the sound of their own voice and want to say something but dont have anything to say so will use one of these sentences while they try and think of something interesting and usually end up saying something like

"at the end of the day i think your right"

which is the stupidest sentence ever!

its just a whole load of crap that defiles the english language!

my mother hated lets face it and also people who turn round and said
What about 'At this moment in time ....'?
jimboy, I'm in total agreement with you. Another one I find hard to understand is almost certainly. ------- akin to being a little bit pregnant.

"Do you know what I mean" or "Do you get me"

grrrrrrrr

No, you moron, you are of such intellect that I have absolutely no comprehension of what you mean.

"At this moment in time" - a favourite of the MK Dons manager Danny Wilson. What's wrong with "now"? Similarly why utilise when you can use? Why say "myself" where "me" is clearly sufficient? And why does football have to be talked about in continuous tenses? i.e. "He's tried to lob the keeper there, and the keeper's just got a finger tip to it", rather than "he tried to lob the keeper, and the keeper got a finger tip to it". Bizarre.

On a more positive note, Chris Eubank provides a model for others to follow. Rarely says anything particularly complicated, yet sounds intelligent enough simply by considering what he says carefully and slowing down, rather than filling every gap with speech.

the thing about my sentences though is they have no use unless like i said you are a pathological liar or very unfair. all the ones you have mentioned, however annoying are correct the ones i have mentioned have no use in common terminology but have somehow become intrduced into general conversation and thats what really irritates me. and as for "at the end of the day" well you just have to be a moron in the first place to use that saying!

I have two:

One is "okey dokey" and the other is "it begs the question.." GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Well jimboy, here's a really dumb one for you: "It makes my blood boil".

Does it?

Really?
Question Author
wel as it makes my temperature rise then an exaggeration is hardly as bad as a phase with no grammatical logic?
Question Author
phrase sorry

Imagine having a phase with no grammatical logic. You could just turn up one day at work saying: 'He says hello at all of them which already are worked" - that could cause confusion.

ps to explain - I only had 3 hrs sleep last night!

I also hate 'Innit' although I still don't think that fits your criteria,

How about 'Thing is, right ... '

Oggie!, Oggie!, Oggie!, Oi!, Oi!, Oi!, Gets right up my nose.

Hairs, they get right up mine
I work with a guy who says "in due course" all the time!! It grates every time he says it.
There's nothing wrong with "almost certainly", Pilotlight. It is nothing like "a little bit pregnant". The sort of thing you may be thinking of are expressions such as "very unique" or "very certain". My pet hates, at the moment, are "Basically", which every moron on TV seems to begin an answer with - implying "I'm cleverer than you, so I will explain things in the simplest possible terms", "Are you joking?" when, clearly, the other person is not joking, and "Do you want me to be honest?", when asked for an opinion.
"why oh why"...? superfluous words perhaps...?

Just try and finish their sentence for them. ie when someone says "At the end of the day" you jump in and say "It gets dark".
