The bleeding of a period is the womb lining breaking down when no fertilised egg implants in it. It is less likely although still possible to get pregnant during the bleed of a period as one of the ovaries may be early in releasing an egg. Also the sperm hangs around in the uterus for a few days waiting for an egg to come by (persistant little beggers!).

If your period starts on day 1 and finishes by day 5, you will probably Ovulate (egg release) about day 14 of a 28 day cycle. Unfortunately, menstrual cycles are not 'clockwork' and they vary for each of us.
