I've been going to a Pilates class for about 8 weeks and I love it!!...I was nervous too but its the best exercise I've ever done.
It concentrates on flexibility, balance and stretches to improve posture etc and it really tones up your tummy muscles - haven't quite got the six-pack yet but I can definately see a big difference.
The exercises are quite dynamic and can be quite difficult to hold but they're built up in layers so you only need to do what is appropriate for you and progress in time.
I would definately recommend it - especially if you find aerobic/step/dance style classes a bit strenuous or like me are a bit uncoordinated!!
Good luck - hope you enjoy it

I forgot to add.....
If you have any injuries/problems in the lower back, neck or shoulders make sure you tell the instructor as some of the excercises won't be suitable but they will be able to give you an alternative.
I found that it is great for releasing any tension in the back & shoulders - especially if you've been sitting at work all day.
