Brain Freeze

Why when Im drinking a slushy COLD drink does my brain get a striking pain? (brain freeze) What cause's brain freeze? How can something cold going into your tummy effect something in your brain to hurt?

Oooh yeah.. one of those IceBlast ones from the cinema food stand. Mmmmm they are ice slush drinks but fizzy too. Mmmmmm That and a KFC would go down a treat.

has it got something to do with the base of the brain being just above the roof of the mouth

Hi Jennykins this isn't fact but I have an idea.

In your frontal bone there is a frontal sinus which drains like all paranasal sinuses into the nose. The nose is continous with the nasopharynx which in turn is continous with the oropharynx which then a little further down become the oesophagus and trachea. Therefore its conceivable that something cold entering your mouth and lowering the temperature there could also lower the temperature in your oropharynx (and ultimately oesophagus and stomach). As you can imagine dropping the temperature in the oropharnyx could cause warm air to enter this region, leaving the other sinuses including the frontal sinus which of course is adjacent to the brain. Leading to 'Brain Freeze' maybe.
