It might be easier for them to meet you somewhere else, where they don't have to be around you constantly (like a park, a fair, a pool, etc.)
It might be a bit awkward for them to meet you for the first time.

I would suggest doing it when you feel ready. I just went to watch the step son play football to start with. Just take it slowly and be guided by how the children feel. I have always only tried to be their mate and it works well.
