For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.I think by putting a note in an invitation with a pointer to where you can view the gift list still indicates that you expect a gift and puts someone in the position of thinking they must buy a gift. And therefore I still find this unacceptable.
It's so cold and impersonal and dare I say it again - rude. How much nicer for a guest to contact the couple and have a chat with them to ask them what they would like for a list and congratulate them on their forthcoming wedding.
I have always preferred to give gifts that aren't practical, can be treasured and that I know will be acceptable to the couple, although this isn't always easy.
However, I think it's OK to invite people to an evening reception only, but certainly wouldn't expect them to bring gifts.
I really don't like big weddings and all the fuss etc. and am with Champagne on this issue. I could never have gone through it myself. Perhaps I am an old meanie, I can think of loads more things to spend money on!!
