When it's exremely hot, red bumps of different sizes (ranging from pinhead size to larger) appear on the first joint of my fingers, and spread. These last almost a month and go away on their own. They're itchy, but not painful. Is this caused by heat or is it something more serious?

You may want to check out the condition "urticaria" on your fav medical site.

I have cold urticaria, which produces the same symptoms (itchy hives & tiny bumps on my hands and arms) after exposure to cold, particularly moist cold. But there's all different types of urticaria, including heat and solar urticaria.
OMG lol! I came to this site cos I searched for "finger bumps" (itchy little b***ers are driving me mad). I was just reading through this thread and found it rather amusing cos I am from Norfolk too. Maybe there really is something there!

(First person to mention "inbred" smells lol!)
