only (strict) catholics have catholic guilt. other religions have their own, but they all have them.

My wife has Jewish guilt, myself Catholic guilt and none of our kids could give a toss so apparently it's not hereditary:)

I think , just from personal experience, it's very much a Catholic thing....and even more prevalent in the West of Ireland!!it's like people revel in misery...thrive on it, or something. I'm a catholic and sufer from it a bit myself but it's terrible that we feel we should be that way, isn't it?

Jews have it too, except ours comes more from our mothers than from religion itself. I think it's just a tool to control children, lol!

I am a non-practising Catholic. And yes growing up I suffered from Catholic guilt but I havent killed anyone and it has only been a few things here and there I have felt guilty about.;-)

I agree about the Irish thing. My parents are irish and I visit often. I love the place, but it is right to remind people that Ireland is full of Catholic guilt, you just have to look back on all the priests that have been found to have abused children, and the nuns who have locked up innocent girls since the age of seven - or should I say the Church.

I think every religion in its own right is the guilty party and not the person!

I find it disgusting that any child should be brainwashed so that they live their life feeling needless guilt. It corrupts innocent minds with unatural ideals which are impossible to live up to.

Yeah but thoase of us who have it are quite fond of it in a sick sort of way. It's like a comfort blanket, take it away and we'd all be ******:)

I was brought up by Irish parents, to go to church every Sunday. I no longer go to church and feel no guilt whatsoever. I don't see the point of feeling guilty.x
