I've just found to my horror that my long boots, which fit me perfectly well before the heatwave, are now impossible to zip up, even though the hot weather has taken a dive. Is this normal?

if they were tight on the calves when u bought them and you have worn them a few ntimes the leather should have stretched to mould to your shape. If you have left them sitting somewhere that got quite hot over these last few hot weeks, the leather will have dried abit and may need feeding to make it supple again, if you moisturise it with a leather polish you should be able to get them on agaion and wear them in again.
