But the fear of annihilation is strong in most of us (if we give it 5 minutes thought). I think that in itself is proof enough that the sentient part of us will continue after the bones have become dust. Annihilation doesn't make sense.

The brain itself will not continue to 'think' as it will be dead!! However, depending on your belief system in the hereafter, you can choose to believe that death is final in terms of mortality, or you can believe otherwise. I believe that what makes us 'us' is more than physical and that we have a soul, which carries on after our physical bodies are dead. I could liken it to electricity; you can't see it but if you stuck your finger in the socket, you'd soon know it was there!! I could carry on for many paragraphs about this but I'll leave it at that!
I was reading up on Jack and Jill during the week - don't ask! - and apparently it relates to France. Anyway, in amongst a lot of other things, I learnt that apparently after a beheading the head is held up by the hair, not to show the crowd that the deed was done, but to show the head the body as the brain is still alive for about 8 seconds after being removed! This of course could be a load of old tosh, but something to think about.
I'm sorry you find thinking so painful. I had a friend who had a similar 'mishap' with a sharp object. He too was seeking oblivion.
At the last minute though, while slipping from consciousness things suddenly went dark and he panicked and cried out for help. His brother found him in time to save his life. In that split second he gained a new perspective on the value of his life, even though it had been painful. He values himself properly now. He's more selective about who he regards as real friends. He doesn't hang around time wasters, simply because he doesn't want to waste his life. But he has an amazing understanding of others because of what he's been through, and works selflessly for people who need help. He still gets depressed, but that's sometimes the price of being a thinker.
