Cleaning a tv
8 Answers
We have a Sony tv with a silver case / cabinet. Unfortunately my wife smokes (in excess) and the casing has started to discolour. The handbook recommends cleaning with a damp cloth and not use solvents or alcohol.
A damp cloth made no impression on the case at all. I have tried meths on a small area at the back and this seems to remove the nicotine stains without any obvious harm to the casing or the surface of it.
However I am very wary about treating the rest of the casing with meths as there may be a long term adverse effect from using it.
Does anyone have any ideas please.
The set is only one year old and would be costly to replace.
The wife is considerably older but would be far more costly to replace.

Fortunately however discoloured your TV becomes, it won't develop cancer. Unfortunately you can't guarantee that your wife will be similarly immune.

Hi dilligaf,
Our silver casing looked quite black, before I decided to try and remove it using something more than a damp cloth!
Used some soapy water ('fairies') (making sure of course the cloth was well rung out) and hey presto it worked. Although we have a new TV now, have just tried maviscoull's suggestion on the old one - and yes the baby wipe was quite black when I had finished cleaning!
Incidentally I only purchased the wipes on recommedation that they were excellent for removing paint (water based) from your hands when decorating!!
The advert should read "Not just for baby's (babies) bums!!" lol

Hi tictactoe,
Soapy water worked fine for everyday dirt and stains but not nicotene.
Our granddaughter was here yesterday and after reading maviscoulls posting she lost a few of her babywipes which worked wonders.
Something I never even thought about .
Will be off to buy my own today.
Thank you all for your hel[p.
