I've got approx. 13000 words of essays due in just over a week. Most of these I haven't actually started doing the reading for yet. The carrot and stick method doesn't seem to be working, any helpful advice (apart from spending less time on here)?

Try thinkinga about the consiqueses (?) (the big stick approach). If they don't bother you perhaps your doing the worng course. I find I am most motivated when I actually want to do some thing rather then drifing into something because its the next thing to do.
What is it that's stopping you? If you are committed to getting the work done but feeling overwhelmed by it, how about breaking it down into more manageable chunks? Its always helpful to do all the background reading but if you are struggling perhaps you could concentrate on skimming the most important texts and look at a study guide as well. You could try working out how many days you have got left (minus one for emergencies)and split the work up equally between them. If you make sure that you finish an essay at the end of a day's studying, it will be uppermost in your mind as you sleep and you may well have additions to make in the morning before moving on to the next one. Last tip, get it all printed out at least a day in advance so if you have a printer disaster all is not lost. Good luck and let us know how the work turns out, it sounds just about achievable.
Maybe you could look forward to a weekend trip as a reward for completing your task. How about Brussels? It's nice and close and you won't have to spend the time you could be studying on planning the trip.......
meet you in the pub asap whiskygalore because am in same position!
Ive heard people in situations similar to you going to the doctors and getting Ritalin. However after reading an article about it in The Observer I'm not sure if I would want to try it.
Only begin. 'A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step' but if you don't take a first step then you can't take a second..
