stevie - I say let those squirrels starve. There are far too many of them and they need a good cull.
But gerkin, no, I don't tread on the acorns - I find it much more fun to kick them. Get a few acorns and a nice open stretch of road or pavement, and kick them just right, and my god do those things GO. They actually seem to GAIN speed. And if they hit a kerb or some other irregularity, they give a terrific flying bounce. Get a really good kick with a clear run, and it almost vanishes into the distance. I expect one day I'll see one disappear over the horizon and then hit me in the back after it's gone right round the Earth.
So next time, yes tread on them but reserve a few for kicking. Conkers also travel well with a good skilful kick - I'm interested to see what this year's are like as last year's didn't seem to be very good kickers. 1999, though - great year for kickers. I kicked one clean across a road junction in Surbiton and watched it bounce into a garden, go dit-dit-dit down some steps and through an open french window into someone's living room. I still like to imagine their confusion as a conker suddenly sped into the room right in the middle of Jonathan Dimbleby.
