Has anybody on here ever had a serious drug problem and managed to give up? Any advice on how somebody can best cope with their cocaine addiction?

they won't be able to give up unless they really want to. they might know they have a problem (it seems they do from the fact they have cut down), but they might not be ready to stop. That's a fantastic step in the right direction, though.
I guess gradually cutting down bit by bit would be the way to go. Spend time around people without doing it to realise you can have a good time without it.
They should definitely avoid being around other people who do it as it's too easy to join in. Even if they're with other people and haven't got any all it takes is for someone to mention it...they all get thinking about it..and one call is all it takes.
Even if they 'give up', they may find on the odd occasion that they laspe. This happens to many people with addictions. But rather than getting cross, the best thing is to brush it aside, put it down as a mistake and start with a clean slate.

I had an horrific coke habit amongst other things and the thing is until he really wants to quit nothing anyone else does is going to make him. He sounds like he's doing really well actually, 50 is certainly not a lot and he'll probably find that his psychological need diminshes on it's own as he sees himself progressing.
He does need to have a look at himself and find out exactly what it is that the drugs are propping up for him, happy folk don't take drugs by and large, there's usually an underlying reason people started in the first place. Identify and deal with that and he'll have far more ammunition against his addiction. I found that coke didn't affect my ability to function and run my businesses etc, but it was a symptom of a deeper dysfunction that until I dealt with was really motivating me in more and more destructive directions, so I'd advise him to get very introspective and see what's going on in his life that's screwing him up so much.

I had a coke habit that was costing me friends as well as money.
I completely changed my lifestyle to get out of it, I severed all ties with the people around me that were doing it and took up drawing to pass the time.
You have to really want to give it up before you can.
I'm still picking up the pieces of the trail of destruction I left now.
To really appreciate life you have to scrape rock bottom first.

A person cannot cope with cocaine addition, they can either give in to it or overcome it the latter obviously being the better. You sound like a good person if your asking so I suggest you do the 4th of the 12 steps and do moral inventory. If cocaine is the drug of choice their is probably some things to be ashamed of
