Please don't blame the fireworks, but the supposed law enforcement officers who do not enforce the perfectly adequate laws to govern firework usage. They have legal powers to confiscate fireworks from under 18's, arrest anyone who lets off a firework in a public place (and have done since 1875), and arrest people who let them off outside of specified times. If the law took as much trouble over catching rogue idiots who MISUSE fireworks as they do persecuting motorists because they are an easy target (no this is not a personal grudge before you ask), then everyone can enjoy them.
Legitimate traders have to pay 500 for the privelige of selling them outside of 2 weeks before bonfire night and leading up to New years eve, so the small corner shop man has to sell more to maximise his profits and compete with white van man who sells dodgy stuff. There is no point in having laws if no one will enforce them, fireworks are a wonderful and safe way to celebrate all sorts of occasions if used properly and we should embrace the fact that we can stil use them.
