Is there any scientific reason why we cry, apart from the defense mechanism when we get someting in our eyes? Is it purely for an outlet of emotion? And if so, why do animals not cry when they're in pain like we do, as they must feel it too.

Also, why do we get the lump in our throats when we cry?
I think we get a lump in our throught because we try to stifle our crying

But we cry with our eyes, not our throat.
