I want to start running but get terrible pains in my shins (presumably shin splints). Are there any particular things I should look for in a pair of trainers that can ease this condition? As I'm only dabbling and will be probably be mostly walking(!), I do not want to spend a fortune. Any suggestions welcome.

you should find a trainer stockist which specialise running shoes and have staff who know about foot support etc and can advise you. Runners Need in Camden are excellent.
i used to get shin splints but then i went to runners need and they said that my running trainers should be a size bigger than your normal shoe/trainer. as when your feet get all hot and sweaty when your running they swell up. then they said something technical about muscles but it came down to, too small shoess can give you shin splints.
Shin splints often occur during exercise because the person has not done warm up stretching exercises beforehand.
