There are many claims of success stories. However there are also many horror stories.
I had an overseas student, who was a first time visitor to England, staying with me. She decided to try this method of meeting people. She was extremely careful with everything she said in her posts and stated quite clearly that she just wanted to meet people to socialise.
Most of the responses that she got very quickly turned to sexual matters. From those that didn't she arranged a number of meetings (in safe places & under my guidance).
She had six "dates" in a 2 month period. One guy was so drunk after 2 hours that she left him. Four of the six obviously had different ideas from those that she had previously made quite clear. There were suggestions that she should go away with them for the weekend or spend the night with them at a hotel etc. They were quickly dumped.
The 6th appeared to be a star. For 2 weeks he took her to local places of interest, theatre, nice restaurants etc and gave her some nice small gifts like flowers, local souveniers, English books and magazines etc. In the 3rd week he bombarded her with phone calls and text messages, sometimes in the early hours. He invited her to his house for the weekend and also offered her a holiday abroad for the following week. He got very angry when she politely declined. She couldn't have gone abroad anyway because of visa restrictions.
It was obvious that he had similar intentions to most of the others and considered that 2 weeks grooming was sufficient to warrant her climbing into bed with him.
So, in answer to your question, although there are many claims that internet dating can be a success this poor girls personal experience was not so.
