I'm hoping to talk the quack into prescribing Zyban to help me quit the wicked weed.
Has anyone else been on this stuff and did it work for them? Any side effects?

Well good for you! you will, i'm sure you already, that you will need more than just the Zyban, but it will be a good aid for you in your endeavor to quit smoking. Not being a smoker myself, but a confirmed Twiglettes and Fudge addict i can only imagine the struggle. You need a positive outlook and you must really be determined to quit or you will be wasting your time and money on a prescription. Let your friends and family know you are quitting and ask if they might be so kind as to refrain from any smoking in front of you while you are trying to quit. Get yourself some sugar free gum or a healthy snack you can carry around with you like unsalted nuts you can carry in your pocket so when you get the urge you can pop something in your mouth to satisfy the oral fixation part of smoking. I would suggest carrot sticks, but not sure how manly you would think that to be. Good luck though!!!
PS. i have had people tell me their sense of taste is so much better since they quit smoking.

wow, wardy! Well, helping those weaker than you to quit smoking is probably cheaper than trying to treat and hopefully curse a smoking related cancer not to mention a possible lung transplant. I live in America and i pay taxes towards schools and such still even though my children have graduated and are in college. I don't go around saying. "i'm not subsidizing your kid to go to public school now that mine have finished. We should all help take care of our fellow man/woman/animal, even those that have vises we don't agree with.

SHANEYSTAR peopele who go playing sports dont do it with the knowledge that they are causing injury to themselves do they, if they do have an injury its an accident, people who smoke are fully aware that they will more than likely become addicted, and not only cause themselves ill health but others as well, how many athletes do you know have to have other drugs to be weened off the sport??? That is not the point gina ..you made a sweeping statement that smokers should not be treated on the NHS.
So therefore you come across me to as someone with no compassion for anyone whatever their plight if brought on by their own misdemeanours,smoking related or not and would like to see only deserving cases treated.
All well and good but this is not cloud cuckoo land .
If people had a better standard of living and this country didn't meddle so much in the affairs of others lots of people might have a better lifestyle and not have to rely on a fag to get through the day.
I played a lot of sport in my younger days and now suffer with osteoarthritis ...it may not have caused it but indirectly it must have something to do with the fact that my joints are worn out .
It's a well known fact that sports people burn out .Take footballers for example ..they are finished by the the time they are thirty in reality .Do you think they sit and suffer in silence with their torn ligaments and what have you? No..they get treatment . Do you deny me my treatment?
I was born when the NHS was a baby and it was a good thing,brought in to alleviate suffering and poverty for the common good.
I admit it has it's shortcomings and if they got rid of the administrators and bean counters it could be run more efficiently .
Many countries are envious of our NHS..and just to answer Mr.Minter .....we can't all afford private health care !!
I rest MY case and wish BDW all the best with his efforts to give up the evil weed ....thereby saving you a couple of bob Gina !!

And... quite frankly ..I give up with people like you ....if our grandfathers and fathers hadn't smoked their way through the trenches and the bombs in the second lot to steady their nerves you wouldn't be reaping the benefits of society as it is today .So have a bit of compassion for people who fall by the wayside and give them your support for trying rather than slate them off .
Well said Shaney. If all cases which were 'self inflicted' were refused treatment on the NHS, the country would be in pretty bad shape.

I will be paying �6.60 to hopefully kick a habit which currently costs me i.r.o �30 per week. Hopefully this means I will live longer, and therefore continue to contribute towards this country. It also hopefully means that I won't need thousands of pounds of NHS money being spent on me to treat a smoking related illness.
May I finally add that smokers / ex smokers should be thanked for pumping Billions of pounds in taxes into the Governments coffer's, which in turn benefits EVERYONE.

shaneystar i didnt mention anything about anyone who causes injury to themselves not enjoying the nhs service, we are inundated with advertising, health facts about people who smoke and the danger is causes for not only themselves but for anyone else, why should i or anyone else not be able to get a cancer teating drug(should i ever need it) because of the lack of funding of the nhs, smoking is a well known drug people go into knowing exactly the dangers it causes. BDW, im sure that in all your time of smoking you have been to the docs with some sort of smoking related illness, had time off work..... Shaneystar you have no idea of my age so what makes you think that i wasnt in one of the wars??
Lol gina were you a Land Army Girl ? And no .....apart from coughs and colds which non smokers get the same as smokers I have never had to go the doctors for a smoking related illness or taken time off work for a smoking related illness. I don't go to work any more and am retired having funded the NHS throughout my working life and the Chancellor with the tax on the ciggies which I used to smoke .
You'll be denying me my pension soon in case I spend it unwisely !! The NHS promotes non smoking and the Airways programme is available in most hospitals. GP surgeries wouldn't have "Giving up "counselling sessions either to help people give up if they didn't think that prevention is better than cure.BDW will be PAYING for his prescription ....it's not coming out your pocket .
