positive/ negative pregnancy test
14 Answers
I've been off since Wed so I've missed loads but it seems like everyone is pregnant this morning?! ;D
Anyway, I gave a urine sample at my local walk-in centre last Tue evening, which shockingly, came back (very faintly) positive. I went back the following morning and did the same.... and it came back negative.
Tuesday night's sample was taken using urine that I'd produced at about 5pm and Wed's was totally concentrated as it was first thing in the morning. I assumed that all would be well but the nurse said that it was suprisingly common that a test would come back negative, when in fact, the patient was pregnant... and that it was much more likely that the test would pick up a hormone or gene that 'wasn't there' than it was to miss one that was, ie. meaning that it would be easier for it to miss the pregnant hormone than it would to find one if I wasn't pregnant.
This has had me worried out of my mind. I was also suffering terribly from thrush AND horrendous cyctitis last week, which I'm hoping may have affected the test.
I'm still waiting for my period, which are totally irregular, but i daren't do another test until Wed when the anti-biotics for thrush and cystitis are out of my system.
Can anyone offer any advice, i'm absolutely petrified!
Thanks X

You could see if you can get a blood test done by your GP or pop to a GUM clinic to see if they can help.
Are you on any contraception at the moment?
Don't panic, whatever happens there are options and we're here to chat if you need us.

Thanks Jenna, I'm absolutely DREADING doing another test. I've only been with my new BF since New Year's Eve so understandably, my head is in absolute knots.
I was told by my nurse that I had to wait for my period before I could take the Pill or injection (which I personally favour) so I've been using condoms until then... obviously to no avail.
It's really helped that i've come into work on my day off, as it's lifted my spirits no end!

Hi Jeanette - the same thing happened to me. I have two children but in between the first and second had a bit of a scare - i bought a home pregnancy test and it showed up faintly positive. I was really upset and worried as my baby was only 5 months old! However, when I went to the doctors the next day the test he sent off came back negative.
They explained it by saying the pregnancy wasn't viable and I'd probably never have known I was pregnant if I hadn't panicked and done a very early first test.
I remember being amazed that the result could change in 24 hours but with no apparent 'bleeding' or pain - I still don't really understand it but I would take comfort from the fact that your last test was negative.
I really don't think that antibiotics, thrush or cystitis would affect the result (by the way - sympathy on the cystitis - I get it and it's horrendous).
Hope things work out for you. But don't panic - as said before there are options and help whatever happens.

That's sensible because a false positive is very unusual.
In my case I think, the pregnancy was incredibly early and the pregnancy hormone was detectable - but only very faintly and then for whatever reason my body seemed to re-adsorb the pregnancy.
Either way - you are clearly very early whatever the outcome which does then leave you all your options. If you need any help with those get back to me, I know exactly what you're going through at the moment and it's not nice.
xx

just do it! It's the only way and it's like everything - once you actually know the answer it's easier to deal with. If you get a positive result this time then you will know definitely you are pregnant - if however you got another negative then I would be pretty sure you're not.
Wouldn't worry too much about the time of day anymore - these tests are so sensitive now they can pick up the hormone at any time - I remember testing mine for what became my daughter (!) at midnight and being convinced it would bleep warnings at me because I'd had a glass of wine!
Will keep my fingers crossed for you.

'm going to find out for defdinate first beofre I tell him, although I've already prepared him by telling him that my period is late, so at least it won't be a complete shock....
Must admit, I've got to hand it to him for sticking around to find out, he's 6 yrs younger than me at 24, only met me on New Years Eve, lives 3 hours away from me and I drop this news on him!!!!!

WOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
Guess what.... my period came last night!!!! In my panic, I thought I was late, when actually, it came on time, which is EXTREMELY rare for me!!!!!!
I told him everythig last night AFTER my period came and he was absolutey fantastic about it, even though he suspected there may be a problem... he just said that if it EVER did happen again, I've got to tell him instead of worrying about it on my own for a week.
Also, i found some Mercelon contraceptive pills I had left over from last year, which don't go out of date until 2008 so I started a new packet last night.... I'm going to visit the nurse later tonight to see if I can take these for a month and go straight on the injection instead....
Just as well, he's taking me away for the weekend on Fri and then I'm meeting his parents on Sunday!!!!!
So much has happened since i met him a month ago it feels like I've known him for ages now, but all is well!!!
Anyway, thank you so much for your time and advice..... XXX
I'm so happy, I could cry ... DEEP SIGH....OH, THE RELIEF.............. ;oD
