My best mate who i love to bits is going thru a rough stage at the min, he feels depressed, isnt happy in him self, isnt as confident lately, has eating and body issues. he feels he needs girls around him, he is single but there are girls out there that like him and he likes them, he is 20 but his parents are very distant with him so i reckon its because of that he feels unloved, all he wants is to be loved, ive told him plenty of times that i care about him loads and love him but he still feels down what else can i say to him

Hmmm, there isnt much else you can say really. If he feels down, anything you say, will just sound patronising to him. I know you mean well, but telling him that you care about him loads doesnt mean anything to him.
Like you say, he wants a girlfriend, or someone of a similar role, that can give him the attention he needs. I suppose the best thing you can do for him, is try and fix him up with one of your mates. If he gets too far into that depression state, it is really hard to get out of and sometimes people never do. Try and do summat quick before he gets to that stage...
