Has anyone ever taken this medication for reasons other than weight loss (you know what I mean)? I was wondering if it had the same physiological effects as another drug that is illegal.

Yes I have. My experience was that it gives you something akin to a high dose caffeine kick, really not much else. I take it you are looking for some kind of oneness with the world and your fellow trippers type of feeling, no such thing here.
