Does anyone suffer from ocd, i have it and ive had a bad day, im having new windows put in and they had to knock some bricks out and never dust sheeted anything, i now have brick dust everywhere and ive taken it bad, cant stop crying, why are they so thoughtless

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.i think there are varying levels and types of OCD, my daughter (14) has always had to brush her teeth a set amount of times, otherwise one of us will die (??) and put clothes on in a certain way ohterwise she'll have a bad day, and the list goes on, me i am obsessively tidy!! if someone is sat in my lounge and they pop to the loo, by the time theyve returned, the cushions have been plumped, drink removed, glass washed, ashtray emptied, coffee table sprayed and wiped with Mr Muscle glass washer etc they look mortified when they return. Must confess when we used to have Barbeques in summer and people wanted the loo (inside....muddy feet etc) i used to say ' Er, well if your really sure you cant wait......go on then!!'

Why does intelligence not overide the absurdness of OCD?
People like me are real victims of OCD.

Curlyperm- Im so glad you mentioned about ur daughter having to brush her teeth in an exact way or someone will die, Ive always had to do stuff, like put my remote controls on my desk in a certain way, brush my teeth in a certain way and put my shoes down in a certain way, or something bad will happen to one of my family! Im so glad its not just me! Ive had this since I was about 7 or 8, started when my grandad was very ill, I thought I was the only one ever! So glad I read this!!!
I used to do what curlyperms daughter did, had to get dressed a certain way - put my right sock on then right shoe, then left sock then left shoe or i was convinced itd mean bad luck if i didnt! I grew out of that one that was when i was around 14years old - now i do things like checking the gas is off about 20 times, checking the doors are locked over and over then being paranoid i might have knocked the oven on so go back down and do further checks grr. OCD has seemed to run in my family though. Since ive moved out with friends i have to bleach the kitchen surfaces and do a thorough clean and get so irritated at bits of mess or things out of place!
When i was younger, when i went to bed, i used to lie there and say goodnight to every single person i knew & every persons pet i knew or i would think i wouldnt wake up in the morning :(

then i got into my teenage years and started coming home drunk, then i was to tired & fell asleep dressed and it seemed to disapear.
But yes, it was very hard & very tiring when i was like that!

yes, i have it. it's still pretty bad but it used to be worse. when i was little: no objects could be touching each other, if i touched one side of my body i had to touch the other side to make it even, when having a bath i would get out probably 20 times to make sure the door was locked. i constantly had to wash my hands in cold water. people still notice that i obssess over little things, but now i can hide it a lot more. ex: i count syllables and letters in my head, spell things backwards in my head. there's some things that are still more obvious. if i have plans to go somewhere and suddenly my hair or makeup is less than perfect, even if i was REALLY excited to go, i'll decide not to. or if some of my friends go somewhere and don't invite me, i start to think: they thought it would be more fun if i wasn't there. they don't care enough about me to include me. i'm a boring person. they don't like me. they hate me. everybody hates me. if anybody cared about me at all, i wouldn't be sitting here bored outta my skull. everyone's life would be better without me. why don't i just die? i get myself so worked up over the smallest things. it's frustrating having ocd. a lot of people are judgemental but they can't even begin to understand unless they have it.
In my late teens I worked with a number of people who had OCD and still stay in contact with someone I cared for to this day, Its a very disabling mental illness. The complusions and obsessions that come with it are very distressing for the sufferer and those around them. However, it seems to have worked its way into describing those that are exceptionally tidy, or don't like mess and I think that trivialises it for the real sufferers.
Its very strange that so many of you have experience of sufferers that believe something bad would happen should they not complete a task the way like. In most cases ( and all I have seen) repeated tasks have been to work through anxiety. Tamirra do you follow many rituals, hand washing, counting steps? Counting sets of things? Having to have things parallel? etc etc have you seen a doctor? Psychotherapist? If not it may even be OCPD not OCD? There are lots of things out there that can help you but of course you need to want that help.
Bobbikay, I am not trying to gawp at your problem but that is fascinating that you have managed to manifest your OCD so its not a physical thing. Was that a conscious decision? Does it feel like a step in the right direction or does it effect you as much as acting out tasks did?

Well I wouldn't say it's OCD, well very mild if it is but If I do something stupid like forget to lock the car for example then I add that to the ever growing list of things to check. So for example sometimes I'll lock the car and walk away but when I did it I wasn't really thinking about locking the car, ie it was on the sort of "auto pilot" that we all use to a certain extent, so I have no actual mental record of locking the car, so I have to return and check but this time I'm focused and now have a clear mental picture of the car locked so I can move on. I only have to check once so it's not as bad as some above. I do the above with several things but they are all things where once I was absent minded. The latest thing on the list was my gym locker! I put all my stuff in, got distracted somehow and locked the locker next door, when I finished my workout I returned to the locked locker only to find it bare! I thought some trick was being played! I eventually found my stuff in the next, unlocked locker! So now I check the lockers either side of mine after I have locked mine! Mad eh?

Also if I touched anything be accident, I had to touch it again, i.e. an even number of times. I grew out of it in my teens but am still very tidy and still prefer even numbers to odd! Also I have to peg my clothes out with the same colour peg per garment!

I suffer from a very mild form of OCD. I was talking about this to a friend the other day who is obsessively tidy and can't wear the same clothes for more than one day and even washes her bed sheets twice a week!
I do silly things like put all my cutlery in the drawer with all the handles facing the same direction. And the toilet roll has to be hanging on the holder with the toilet paper folding over the top. And the other day I found that I was folding towels/teatowels in a certain way too!
Every now and then I check my sanity by making a point of not doing any of the above. Or doing the opposite, in fact.
I'm such a rebel.
