i have been prescribed a 5 day course of these steroids for a chest infection in conjunction with antibiotics, i have to take 6 per day but doc said to take the 6 all in one dose. I have never heard of this before so can anybody on AB please tell me if you have had to do this? Also i have heard that you have not to stop the tablets suddenly but to reduce dosage gradually? Doc never said anything about that just to take 6 tabs for 5 days. thank you

This is a steroid and some people with chronic illnesses such as asthma may take it for many years - these are the people who must not stop taking it suddenly.

I strongly advise you to telephone your GP and ask him to clarify how you take these tablets. He is the only one you should be asking.
good advice as always ethel, pharmacist may also be of assistance
It is a perfectly normal dose, I administer it all the time. You dont need to reduce gradually if it's a short course of treatment, only when taken over a long period of time.

Thank you to all for your good advice.
It is normal to take the prednisolone as a single dose, usually in the morning with your breakfast.
If you have been prescribed a short five day course there is no need to gradually reduce the dose - this is only important if you are on high doses for long periods of time.
As fine, thanks suggests you should ask the pharmacist who dispensed your course of medicine and they will confirm just what I have told you.
Hi patty,
If you are only on the short course there is no need to worry about stopping them suddenly , this usually applies to the likes of me who , as a severe asthmatic , can be on them for long peroids. Also , yes , you just down the tabs all together in the one daily intake. They are so tiny that you shouldn't have trouble swallowing them.
Hope that we have all answered your question but , if you are not sure still , you can give your gp a ring.
Hope you feel better soon :-)
