getting a perm
I have fairly long hair with a bit of a natural wave to it, in fact, it seems to be getting wavier the older i get, as a teenager my hair was dead straight.
if i load my hair with product i can get the waves to stay in, or at least, stay fairly defined, but they won't ever form proper curls. would getting a perm be a good idea? i don't know anyone who has a perm, and my only memories are from the 80's when i used to see girls all the time with perms, their hair was so stiff from all the crap they had to put in it to maintain the perm that it looked tacky and totally fake. Have perms moved on since then?

They do still dry the hair out, unfortunately, but the curls can be softer and more natural looking these days.
You will need to spend time styling your hair in order to get it looking its best. Remeber that if your hair is fairly long then it will pull the curl down, so you will need to blow-dry upside down and very slowly to add extra bounce to your curl. Then you'd finish by using a cool setting and taking sections of hair in your fingers and setting the curls into 'groups'. That way it'll look more slick and elegant, or you can tousle it to look more 'surfer chick'.
I'm thinking about doing the same! :o)
