Close call
22 Answers
Hello , on the way to Meadowhall yesterday a lorry blew one of its tyres which flew across the divide and towards the car , missing us by a whisker . Someone or something was looking after us I feel. Have you had an incident whereby you have felt you have just had a close call ? :-)

Just luck really that it was only a close call. I did get a severe electric shock once, but fortunately (i.e. luckily nature intervened) I was thrown ten feet onto my back just before I fried. If someone was looking after me, I wished they had told me (metaphysically speaking) not to go near that bloody appliance.
Well bigmamma, a few weeks ago I was crawling on the hard shoulder (as directed) between 10 and 9 on the M1 at the widening works. A tanker a few cars in front pulled over and I could see the motorway 'arrow' vehicle. It was not displaying its arrow or working so as I was 300 yards short of coming off stayed put, eventually being behind it. Suddenly the lorry starts to lower its gate (bit like a horse box drop door) down towards me. Nowhere to go in solid traffic, hand stuck on the horn and I'm scared.
I got into the next lane as soon as I could but was really shaken.
I made an official complaint. The reply said it was displaying its warning lights and inferred that if the lady wants to drive up its rear thats her look out.
I called them a bunch of liars and if they are intending to close an active lane they should come onto the motorway with the arrow already working.
They agree lack of consideration to other road users and will see if they can do this another way in future.

You felt that something or someone was looking after you and that's what matters. I have trouble believing in higher beings but I would never tell you it was 'just luck' that you didn't get smashed into by a speeding tyre when I would be as unable to prove it was 'just luck' as I would that it was something else. You know what you felt and if you felt you were being watched over then that's that as far as I'm concerned!
anyway, glad that either by providence or luck you were kept safe.no, I've had a couple of times when I've thought, 'oh f*ck, that could have ended so differently', but never anything like you describe.

Hi bm had something similar the same happen on a motorway last year, was driving along merrily having a shave reading the sun and drinking coffee (thats one for the feminists on here that think us mere men cant multie-task mz hawkes) sorry, anyway was doing 70 when all of a sudden a mondeo zoomed past me must have been doing 90 with a 3 tier 18 foot metal ladder on its roof rack.
It cut in just after passing me almost cutting me up then after it was about 100 yards ahead of me all of a sudden I could see this great gig huge ladder that had fallen of spinning round and round through the air heading straight for me so spilt me coffee put moby away and threw the blow up r/d out of the window and all I can say is thank god for abs brakes as I mannaged to steer around it.
Phew have to wipe myself now thinking about it again.
Ok I have made a bit of fun about this but it did happen to me.

I've had plenty of close calls, and plenty of 'hits'. It does come down to elements of luck and judgememt rather than being watched over. I'm with Octavius. If someone was watching me, I'd appreciate them not even letting them get close. I get more Dawkins-like every day now, and the thought of mysterious entities interacting with our lives makes me splutter into my tea with derision.
Bet you feel great today though bigmamma. Close calls can be quite invigorating

me and mum were walking across the road at a pedestrain crossing the lights were red for traffic and the wee green man was shown. this boy racer zoomed through the red lights and missed us and 2 other ladys who were older.
we all got a real fright and as i was just 7 months pregnant it gave us more of a fright when we thought of what could have happened.
we all were too shook up to get it together to phone the police so unfornutatly this idiot got away scot free
it doesent bear thinking about when things like this happen! radio. xxxxx

Hi BM, I'm so pleased 'someome' was looking after you that day & glad that got home safely from your journey.
A similar thing happened to us on the M1 some years back. A trailer carrying a stock car was trundling along in front of us, when one of the trailer wheels flew off & came hurtling towards us. Our hearts were pounding, but we & it it managed to change tack & carry on bouncing behind us along the hard shoulder!
Have a lovely day. -xx-

Hi BM. When I was 19 I was driving home after a shift as a bar manager when I skidded and lost control of my car. The wheels hit the kerb and I was somersaulted over into a field. I was trapped upside down in my seatbelt and coudn't free myself. I was literally in the middle of no-where (fields between Sheff and Rotherham) This was at 3.45am. Two lads who had drank their taxi fare home were walking home , heard my screams and pulled me out of the car. They called for help for me and waited until the police arrived. As I was being breathalised (clear, I might add, naturally) I saw them walking away. I never did find them to say thank you, and the police say that the person who called them was a female. I don't even know if these guys existed (the police said I was alone when they arrived) so I always have a little suspicion that someone out there sent me a helping hand.
Do you know BM I was fine, didn't have a mark on me. The Jeep was a write off but at least I lived to tell the tale!! Was the lorry a UK lorry do you know? I only ask because some of the continental lorries which are driving around nowadays are unfit to be on the roads and the drivers don't seem to be subject to any safety inspections as they come into the UK. It sounds like you had a lucky escape babe xx
